Green roofing

Construction of a green roof is a great way to use the space of the city, protect the environment and save in the long run. These vegetative or garden roofs - part of the roof with plants installed over the waterproofing membrane - have become a very successful solution around world.

Advantages:

  • Have beneficial effects on the climate in cities:
  • They reduce dust, regulate humidity.
  • Additional heat and sound insulation (up to 50dB).
  • Slowly drain water during rain and thus reduce the burden on sewer.
  • Protects roofing from mechanical damage and UV radiation.
  • Reduces thermal stress of roof coating.

Disadvantages:

  • Increase the load bearing structure
  • Higher costs of implementation
  • Difficult to repair any faults of isolation
  • Demanding maintenance - irrigation, replenishing vegetation, …

History

Realization of vegetation roofs is common in Western Europe. The USA has green roofs annual growth of 30% -40%. We had roof gardens designed mainly in the 30th to 40th and then from the 70's of the 20th century.

Similarly, in many European cities there are laws asking technical requirements for construction which are ordering the substitute part of the built-up area with greenery. The easiest way is simply green roof. Even developers begin construction of apartments, which are with green terraces and roofs, as there is great interest. Mediderma company has extensive experience in the design and implementation of vegetative roofs.

Types of green roofs

When designing green roof garden, it is based on the same design principles as for other roofs, ie. own vegetation layer should be carried out immediately after the completion of the roof cladding layers (for conventional roofs at end of waterproof layer, and for reversed, or combined with thermal insulation with protective cloth).

In terms of the kinds of greening we distinguish extensive and intensive roof vegetation.

Extensive roof vegetation

Extensive green roof can be characterized as durable and easy. These include mainly mosses, some grasses, wild herbs, perennials carpet, rock and sedum. This greening is proposed for roofs with a load capacity from 60 to 300 kg / m2 at 6-14 cm roof substrate. Usually it is not necessary to design irrigation system.

Intensive roof vegetation

Intensive green roofs include lawns, flowers, various types of shrubs and trees. This type of greening needs substrate thickness exceeding 20 cm and can therefore be designed only for roofs with a load capacity up to 1500 kg / m2. There is necessity of irrigation system.
